DAMASCUS, Va. — Hikers and backpackers in Southwest Virginia now have an easy and affordable way to store food safely while exploring the region’s trails, thanks to a bear canister rental program at the Damascus Trail Center.
The center is offering BearVault bear canisters for rent, which can be picked up and dropped off daily between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Rentals are priced at $5 per day or $15 for a seven-day rental, with a variety of canister sizes available to meet different trip lengths. Renters must be 18 years or older to borrow a canister.
Bear canisters are specially designed, hard containers that keep food, snacks, and other scented items secure from wildlife, particularly black bears. By preventing animals from accessing human food, canisters protect both hikers and wildlife. Bears that become accustomed to human food may behave aggressively or become habituated, sometimes requiring wildlife authorities to intervene.
Typically made from durable plastic or composite materials, bear canisters feature locking lids that are difficult for animals to open. Hikers place all food and scented items inside the canister and store it away from sleeping areas. Using a canister is considered a best practice for backcountry safety in regions where bears are present.
The Damascus Trail Center’s rental program makes this essential safety gear accessible to hikers who may not own a canister, such as first-time backpackers, travelers from out of town, or those who prefer to pack light. This accessibility encourages proper wildlife safety practices while allowing hikers to enjoy the trails responsibly.
The program is particularly useful for hikers exploring parts of the Appalachian Trail near Damascus, Va., a region popular with long-distance and day hikers. The area features a mix of rugged terrain, forests, and campsites, where interactions with wildlife are more likely if proper precautions aren’t taken. By providing canisters for rental, the trail center helps minimize human-wildlife conflicts, reduce littering of food scraps, and promote safe outdoor recreation.
In addition to safety, using bear canisters supports environmental stewardship by helping to maintain the natural behaviors of wildlife in the region. By keeping bears and other animals from seeking out human food, hikers help preserve the ecological balance of the trail and surrounding forests.
For more information about rental sizes, fees, or hours of operation, hikers can visit the Damascus Trail Center in person or contact staff directly. The program is open daily and provides a simple way for hikers to stay safe and responsible on Southwest Virginia’s popular backcountry trails.
