Best of the Midwest: 5 Winter Wonderland Events to Put on Your 2026 Calendar

From German Christmas markets and millions of lights to winter festivals and downtown celebrations, these five Midwest events are worth bundling up for this season.

November through January

Winter in the Midwest gets a bad rap. Yes, it can be cold. Yes, there will probably be some snow. And yes, you may have to scrape ice off the windshield before heading out. But winter also gives the region some of its best events of the year.

Cities, zoos, gardens and downtown districts across the Midwest lean into the season with glowing light displays, outdoor markets, ice skating, live entertainment and plenty of reasons to leave the house when the sun goes down at 5 p.m.

For 2026, these five events offer a good mix of holiday tradition and winter fun, from Carmel, Indiana, to Duluth, Minnesota.

Carmel Christkindlmarkt | Carmel, Indiana

If you want a little European holiday atmosphere without leaving the Midwest, Carmel is a good place to start.

The Carmel Christkindlmarkt returns Nov. 21 through Dec. 24, 2026, in downtown Carmel. The market is built around the feel of a traditional German Christmas market, with wooden huts, German food, European gifts and an outdoor ice-skating rink.

CarmelFest is not the winter event, despite the similar Carmel name. The winter celebration to put on the calendar is the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. Its 2026 season runs through Christmas Eve, with the market closed Mondays and Tuesdays during its regular schedule.

The market has become one of Carmel's signature winter attractions and has received national attention, including recognition as a top U.S. holiday market.

The best part is that you do not really need a plan. Walk through the market, grab something warm to eat, browse the shops and watch skaters make their way around the rink. It is the kind of place where a quick stop can easily turn into an entire afternoon.

Bentleyville Tour of Lights | Duluth, Minnesota

If your idea of a winter wonderland involves an almost unreasonable number of Christmas lights, head north.

Bentleyville Tour of Lights returns to Duluth from Nov. 21 through Dec. 26, 2026. The free walk-through display takes over Bayfront Festival Park along Lake Superior and features more than 5 million lights. That is a lot of lights.

The event has been running for more than two decades and has become one of Minnesota's major holiday traditions. Visitors can walk through illuminated displays while taking in views of Lake Superior. The event also includes holiday activities and plenty of opportunities to warm up along the way.

The lake adds another layer to the experience. Duluth in December is not exactly known for mild evenings, so dress accordingly. The cold is part of the deal.

For families, it is an easy way to make a night out of the holiday season. For photographers, the combination of lights, snow and the lake can make for some pretty good scenery.

Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo | Powell, Ohio

You do not have to give up your zoo day just because winter arrives. Wildlights at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium returns Nov. 20, 2026, through Jan. 3, 2027. The annual event turns the zoo into a nighttime display of holiday lights while still giving visitors a chance to see some of the animals.

The zoo recommends arriving before 4 p.m. if you want to see animals that tend to settle in for the night earlier. Some animals, including reindeer and tigers, may still be visible outdoors, while others can be seen in indoor habitats.

Wildlights is more than just walking around looking at lights. The event has included holiday entertainment, special experiences and opportunities to see the zoo after dark.

For families with younger children, the event also offers sensory-friendly programming on select dates, giving guests an option for a quieter experience. The zoo also plans to bring back its reindeer experience for the 2026 season.

Garden Glow | St. Louis, Missouri

The Missouri Botanical Garden takes winter lights seriously. Garden Glow returns Nov. 14, 2026, through Jan. 2, 2027, on select nights. More than 2 million lights will be used throughout the garden, turning the grounds into a nighttime winter display.

The event is designed to be walked, which makes it different from a drive-through light display. Visitors can take their time moving through the garden and checking out the different installations. And yes, it is a rain-or-snow event.

That is worth remembering if you are visiting St. Louis in December. Winter weather is part of the experience, and the garden encourages guests to come prepared.

Garden Glow also gives visitors a chance to combine the lights with food and drinks, and some nights offer additional experiences. For those who want to make more of an evening out of it, the garden offers options to add dinner or reserve a fire pit.

Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival | Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Downtown Milwaukee becomes its own winter light show during the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival

The 2026 festival is scheduled for Nov. 19 through Jan. 1, 2027, bringing holiday lights and seasonal activities to several downtown parks and public spaces.

The festival spreads across Cathedral Square, Zeidler Union Square and Pere Marquette Park, so visitors can turn the evening into a walking tour through downtown.

One of the easiest ways to see the displays is the Jingle Bus, which provides a holiday-themed ride through the city. There is also an Ornament Trail and other seasonal programming.

Unlike some of the bigger ticketed attractions on this list, much of the Milwaukee festival is about simply being downtown and enjoying the lights.

That makes it a good choice if you want a winter outing without having to build an entire weekend around one attraction.

After walking around, Milwaukee's restaurants and cafes give visitors plenty of options for warming up. A cold night followed by a hot meal is not a bad Midwest tradition.

Winter Is Worth the Road Trip

There is something about winter events in the Midwest that makes the season feel a little easier to handle. Maybe it is the lights. Maybe it is a cup of hot chocolate after walking around outside. Maybe it is skating in Carmel, looking out over Lake Superior in Duluth or wandering through a garden covered in millions of lights.

Whatever the reason, these events offer a good excuse to get out of the house this winter.

And if you are already going to be cold, you might as well make a trip out of it.
