OFF-GRID STAYS

There's something about sleeping in a treehouse that never stops being cool.

Maybe it's because it brings back childhood memories of backyard forts. Or maybe it's because waking up surrounded by treetops just beats another hotel parking lot view. Either way, Mountaintop Treehouse, tucked into the hills outside Nashville, Indiana, delivers.

Just about an hour south of Indianapolis, hidden among the hardwood forests outside Nashville, Indiana, this handcrafted retreat feels less like a vacation rental and more like the kind of place you dream up when you were a kid.

The first thing you'll notice is all the wood. Vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and huge windows make the space feel bigger than you'd expect. It has that cozy cabin vibe without feeling dark or cramped.

Then there's the view.

One of the favorite spots is the cedar dining nook tucked beside the windows. Breakfast hits differently there. The only distractions are birds hopping between branches and the occasional deer wandering through the woods below. And let's not forget the private sunken hot tub. After spending the day hiking Brown County State Park or wandering around downtown Nashville, sinking into warm water while looking out across the forest just feels like the right move.

As the sun dropped behind the hills, everything slows down. The birds get quieter. The stars come out. Nobody checks the time. That's pretty rare these days. One thing you won't expect is how little you'll want to actually do anything. Normally, weekend trips turn into packed schedules, find the best coffee shop, hit every trail, stop at every overlook before heading home. This isn't that.

You'll found yourselves hanging around the treehouse longer than planned because...why leave?

Coffee turns into another cup of coffee. Books stay open for hours. The deck becomes the best seat in the house. Sometimes the best part of a trip isn't checking things off a list. It's having absolutely nowhere you need to be.

That said, if you do decide to venture out, Brown County makes it easy.

Brown County State Park is just a short drive away and has miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. If you're chasing overlooks, you'll find plenty. If you're visiting in October, you're basically walking through Indiana's best fall colors. Downtown Nashville is worth exploring, too. It's full of local shops, coffee spots, art galleries and restaurants that somehow still feel authentic instead of touristy. Grab lunch, wander around for a bit, then head back to the woods before everyone else has the same idea.

The best thing about Mountaintop Treehouse isn't that it's fancy. It's that it helps you slow down. You start noticing things you normally miss. The wind moving through the trees. Morning fog rolling across the valley. The way the light changes as the sun works its way through the forest. You don't realize how noisy everyday life is until it suddenly isn't.

Every season would be worth coming back for. Spring brings fresh green leaves and cool mornings with coffee on the deck. Summer is made for late-night hot tub sessions and sleeping with the windows cracked open. Fall is exactly what you'd expect in Brown County, ridges covered in orange, red and gold. And winter? We'd happily watch snow fall from inside with a blanket and a mug of something warm.

Treehouses aren't just for kids anymore. They're for people who need a weekend that doesn't revolve around schedules, screens or traffic. Mountaintop Treehouse reminds you that sometimes the best getaway isn't about going farther. It's just about getting outside. And honestly?

We'd book it again without thinking twice.
